Judge Spotlight - Phoenix Rising

Written by LJ Summers

I met Phoenix Rising (PhoenixRising25 on FFn) when she became my validating beta at Twilighted (where you can find her Phoenix Rising profile with beautiful banners). She immediately struck me as a well-spoken woman with an open mind. She had to have an open mind; I was asking her to validate an Embry/Bella pairing! Though she is an Edward girl through and through, she was kind enough to not only take on my Imprinting: The Mating Imperative series, but also to feature it with a distinctive set of blue ribbons.

She won my undying loyalty, of course!

I soon found that she wrote a lovely OC story, Kindred Spirits, in which there is no Bella, but there is a vampire named Theda who wins Edward Cullen’s heart.  Phoenix Rising is a truly talented writer who knows how to BE a writer, so she continued to present this spirited and compelling OC even though the very idea of Edward being with anyone other than Bella is anathema to fully half the fandom.  I totally respect her.

Phoenix has tenacity and class. AND she’s got the most delightfully sexy mind!  Not only is she gorgeous (She is! I’ve seen pictures!) but her mind is very good at creative sexual play.  I highly recommend her one-shot, Man Maid in Chicago (Maidward is smokin’ hot!) and her sexin’ up of the Twilight Saga in her multi-chapter fic that reads like a series of steamy one-shots, From the Cutting Room Floor.  Here, she takes the Twilight Canon and squirts lemon juice liberally on some very interesting scenes. Definitely a recommend.

Beyond being a brilliant writer, Phoenix is a talented and insightful beta-reader. I’m not just saying that because she adopted me at Twilighted, either. *wink*  She has been very encouraging and reassuring and accessible (I can almost always find her on twitter) as I have attempted some branching out in my own fanfic.

She is currently one of the Top Ten Most Prolific Authors on Twilighted.  She is also climbing the ranks at MyVampFiction, so that she has the opportunity to share her award-winning writing with even more appreciative readers.

My very best favorite of her stories (yes, I have a favorite) is her current WIP, The Disillusioned.

This story is very tricky as it begins and I know her readers were all agog wondering what the mystery was behind Edward’s stay at a mental health facility. Mentalward is hot, by the way... Her Bella in this story is extraordinary – spunky and brave but still very canonical.  Edward is not a Cullen when the story begins, which is a nice change of pace.  Soon, though, the Cullens make an appearance.  Here is an excerpt from The Disillusioned, when Bella and Edward have their first real conversation:

. . .

Edward nodded. "I don't want to break anything else. When I woke up from my change, it was terrible."

I hummed, mulling that over. "If you don't mind me asking, where are your fangs?"

His eyes darted to me; angry green slits that oozed suspicion.

"Dr. Marshall mentioned that you're a vampire," I said quietly. "When I first started here, he briefly went over you and the other three residents so I knew who you were. That's all."

Edward exhaled, obviously relieved. "I don't have fangs. My teeth are really sharp. I guess my saliva is venom now, and I can eat human food, but it…it makes me feel sick."

"Do you drink blood?" I asked, somehow not really wanting the answer. It was pretty obvious Edward was convinced he was a vampire, but I hoped he didn't go to that extreme.

He hung his head. "Just once," he said, standing. Our conversation was over.

. . .

Phoenix Rising is a truly exemplary woman of the Twilight fandom, and she is writing her own original work!  I hope you will check out her talent and get to know her.  I am happy and proud to call her my friend.

Judge Spotlight - Nolebucgrl

As written by Leanne Golightly

Like Rameau, I first stumbled across Nolebucgrl during the Silence of the Wolves Contest.  An excerpt of one of her stories was used as one of the examples of how to kill a wolf and around this time, I first checked out Taste of Innocence. More about that in a moment...

Nole has written a number of awesome stories.  First up is the completed multi-chapter Sacrificial Lamb, which is an M-rated, end of Eclipse AU/Canon fic, approached from the angle of Jacob and Bella as just friends and replacing SM’s Breaking Dawn.

Hands up everyone who thought SM made Bella a little too perfect in BD?  That many, huh?  Well, Nolebucgrl still provides a wedding, a honeymoon and immortality for Bella, but no babies or squicky imprints, and more of a sense that making major life choices involves some sacrifice along the way.  There are also a number of outtakes to accompany the main multi-chapter.

First and Ten opens up with a bang...in the locker room between aspiring sports writer, Bella, and hot quarterback, Edward Cullen.  The first chapter lemon is all kinds of awesome...check it out and you’ll see.  If you develop a thing for athletic guys, check out the thread on Twilighted

And now, in my humble opinion, we come to the biggie.  Taste of Innocence. Oh my lordy Lord, how do I begin to describe my love for this fic?

First, I have to mention that I reached ExB saturation point a while ago, but there are a few stories I make an exception for.  This is one of them.  Why?  Because it’s goddamn AMAZING, of course

Edward, or Smugward as he is affectionately known, is VERY OOC from the emo, tortured eternal teen we know from the Twilight saga.  He is very much a red-eyed bad boy in this story...and anyone who knows me knows I prefer my vamps this way.  Living off the dregs of society, Edward longs for someone a little more innocent to satisfy his hunger to add a little variety to his diet.  Enter Bella Swan.

I could go on forever about the best parts of this stellar fic, but in a nutshell here are the moments that stand out for me.

  1. Cockblockage on an epic scale.  I’m female, but damn if my own unmentionables weren’t turning blue.
  2. Bella’s obsession with TV vampires.  Something for us all to identify with.
  3. The novel approach of dowsing yourself in blood to attract the attention of a certain newborn female.
  4. The mid story interviews with Bella and Smug.
  5. Killer OCs—on an epic scale.  I was literally gutted that Willow the Cow  and Leanne the kick-ass prostitute (sexy AND informative—what more could a vamp on a mission want?) didn’t get a nomination for the OC Awards. (Judges weren’t allowed to nominate, but if I could have...)

Trust me, you will be glad you checked this fic out.  Don’t believe me?  Get on twitter and get a second opinion from Smugward, or drop by the Taste of Innocence Twilighted thread.  Try it, and trust me...you will want one of these babies, too.

Other stories on Fanfiction.net by Nolebucgrl include:
Bite of Darkness  – A collection of Taste of Innocence Outtakes.
Dinner Dates – Rosalie/Emmett. Collab with Rameau.
Bad Girlfriend – Possessiveward and Teasella.  Collab with InfinityPoet.
Stealing Home – Another sporty ExB...this time the game is baseball.

And my write up wouldn’t be complete without a quick excerpt.  Consider this a potty-mouth warning—Edward curses a little.  Okay—a lot!

Taste of Innocence, Epilogue 1:

It wasn't like she hadn't been putting out heavy fucking hints lately. She constantly had that fucking wedding channel on and made me watch those insane bitch brides going off on their friends and family as the pressure of the wedding brought out their insanity. I'd constantly had to ask her why the fuck anybody wanted to marry the women in the first place because the first time my would-be wife acted like that would be the last fucking time she'd be my would-be wife.

Bella, of course, would just fucking laugh and say that's why she'd never want a big wedding. Okay, baby, message fucking received. It's not like we had a shitload of people in our lives to invite anyway. We could invite her father, who now knew about me after she told him about Jacob "abandoning" her in Barbados, leaving her high and dry like the douche that he was. I had swooped in to rescue her, the knight in shining armor, which was quite fucking hilarious. He still wasn't happy with her but they talked weekly while she and I traveled the world, or so he fucking thought anyway.

Her friends were no longer really her friends. She'd spoken to Alice a time or two but the rift of their separation was a bit too much to overcome and though it hurt Bella, it was really better in the fucking long run. Alice would live a human life and die a human death and it would only hurt my girl to be a part of that. Rose had gotten knocked up by some one night stand and returned home to wherever the fuck she was from. I didn't really give a shit because she was unworthy of my Bella anyway.

Demetri and his Volturi fuck friends were a definite fucking no, even though he faithfully called us every couple of months to check in and make sure we were still doing well. What the fuck ever, like he wasn't the most transparent fucker in the world? We both knew what he wanted and neither of us was fucking fooled. The worst was when he'd put Alec on the fucking phone to tell me all about some ridiculous new piece of art featuring naked men that he adored. Like I was going to be fucking turned on by that? Please. They wanted us to visit and maybe someday we would but I really fucking doubted it.

No, it was just the two of us as it should be. After she said yes, I could just whisk her away to City Hall and we could be done with it in a matter of minutes. No fuss, no big fucking deal. Why the fuck did it have to feel like one?

Judge Spotlight - Rameau

As written by Leanne Golightly

I first stumbled across Rameau while she was organising the Silence of the Wolves Contest earlier in the year.  The contest was really well organised and entertaining, and as such I decided this Finnish filly would be an ideal person to have on board for the OC Awards. I have to admit that I gave her and her judging partner some of the hardest categories to judge, and so I had best make this a good write up to make up for it!

You can find Rameau on Fanfiction.net, Wordpress or Tumblr. Her Tumblr is mainly for inspiration, but you can read her multi-chapter, Amorous Conundrums for Dichotomous Creatures, on her Wordpress, or you can find a number or Twilight one or two shots on her Fanfiction.net profile—amongst other things.  You can tweet with Rameau, who is on Twitter as le_rameau.

Rameau also does some beta work.  She betas for fellow Silence of the Wolves Contest organiser and OC Awards judge, Nolebucgrl, and speaks very highly of Nole’s work (this I can wholeheartedly second.) Word Ninja has also benefitted from Rameau’s beta skills, amongst others.

Amorous Conundrums for Dichotomous Creatures, or AC/DC for short, is a WIP currently on hold, following six people and three couples in the city.  Rated M, AU, extremely OOC and HEA not guaranteed—but dang, if it isn’t exceptionally well-written judging by the four full chapters posted so far! You can already feel the complicated relationship webs being spun.

Rameau has a number of short stories posted on Fanfiction.net, as listed below:

Dinner Dates (Rosalie/Emmett AH, Rated T, Collab with Nolebucgrl)

Good Conversation (Carlisle/Jasper non-graphic slashy conversation which I ADORE, Rated M)

Ashes Are Burning (Alice/Jasper emotional Eclipse AU, again—I adore! Rated T)

A Morning Run (Jasper/Female to be revealed later...the first Rameau one shot I ever read.  Guess what?  I adore it!)

Her Weakness, His Breath (Maria/Jasper—short but beautifully written, Rated T)

Breaking Through gets a bit of a longer mention from me...a) because it’s her most recent posting, and b) because I love Leah fanfiction! Rated M, it’s a Jacob and Leah Breaking Dawn AU, picking up after Renesmee’s grisly birth leaves Bella dead on the operating table. Jacob rushes downstairs intending on destroying the hybrid baby, but instead of imprinting, the child’s eyes, which are like Bella’s, dissuade him from taking his frustrations out on the child.

Rushing off into the wild, Leah—my favourite character in the saga—follows him and offers some helpful advice.  Leah has already had to deal with heartbreak and the person you love being with another.  I don’t like her being portrayed as a two dimensional bitch. Rameau’s Leah is incredibly insightful about the similarities between her and Jacob’s situations, but what really makes this one shot stand out for me is Leah’s intelligent and unique view of the whole imprinting phenomenon.

"But the imprint-"

"I don't believe in it. You men may have convinced yourselves that it's destiny and survival of the wolf gene in us. You can tell yourselves that it's the imprint that ties you to one woman and that's why she's the centre of your universe you can't help but gravitate to. You can blame the magic all you want, but it is just love. Plain, simple love. Everything Sam feels for Emily now, I felt for him before he'd ever consider that the old legends could be true. He was the centre of my universe and my life revolved around him. Sam loved me in his way, he was ready to commit himself to me and lie the rest of our lives about who he really is, but in the end he chose to love Emily more."

Leah was shaking her head as her strength was drained from her.

"Sam, Jared, Quill, Paul. None of them knew how to love until it was shown to them. I don't know if it's a difference between men and women or if it's an individual thing, but for me it's easy. It fills my heart, my body and soul to the brim. It's the most natural thing in the world to me, to love someone, to care for them, to commit myself to them and to do my damndest to ensure their happiness. Unfortunately, very few people are worth that kind of love."

"Sam isn't."

"Neither is Bella."

"Do you really want him back?" Jacob asked and forgot to breathe.

Leah tilted her head and world before letting out a chuckle and shaking her head. "No, I don't."

This section completely killed me dead and I fell in love with it.  Oh, and there is a particularly sweet lemon, too.  I would heavily recommend any Blackwater fans or those who think of Leah as a complicated, strong character to check this out. Like, really.

Judge Spotlight - LJ Summers

Written by Phoenix Rising

LJ Summers is a judge for the OC Awards, a talented author of both original fiction and fan fiction, and has posted her stories on a variety of websites for our enjoyment.  She can be found as LJ Summers on Twilighted, Fanfiction.net, The Edge Girls’ Blog, and on A Different Forest (her Cabin and Storytelling Corner.)  She also will be starting a column on MyVampFiction which, I am told, is going to debut sometime around the end of the month.  And with all the time she spends with her family and tweeting with me (follow her on Twitter) I’m not sure how she finds the time to sleep!

I met the lovely LJ when I found one of her multi-chapter stories called The Hardest Part in the queue on Twilighted.  For those who don’t know, I’m a validation beta over there.  When I started validating THP, I quickly realized two things: First, that this was an extremely well-written and engrossing story, and secondly, that this was not a B/E tale.  Now, I’m a vamp girl at heart, and technically this was a B/E story, but the E was for Embry Call, not Edward Cullen.  The vamp girl warred with the part of me that wasn’t sure it liked imprinting stories, but I quickly found myself hoping she’d upload the next chapter immediately so I could read it.  One story turned into two and more, and before I knew it, I was thoroughly enjoying the series she dubbed Imprinting: The Mating Imperative.  LJ’s characterization of everyone in her stories seems real and spot on, and her storytelling never feels rushed or slow – it’s just like Goldilocks’ middle ground: Just right.

My favorite of her Imprinting series has to be Never Saw That Coming, which is a Leah/Charlie imprint story.  It’s funny, awkward, and just pure gold…and yes, there is a Leah-meets-Renee moment.  A final note on this series: Jake does get his happily-ever-after (being the perv I am, I nearly wrote “happy ending”) with a lovely OC straight from LJ’s imagination.  Even if you’re not a fan of OC’s, go check this one out.  Cassie is a stuck-up, bitchy spitfire, but she wins you over in no time (and poor Jake too, even though he has no choice.)

Eventually LJ submitted a sweet Edward/Bella story called From the Wings, and I was thrilled when she wrote a mysterious, twisty sequel titled Places, Everyone!.  From what I hear, she’s also working on a third in that series.  There’s also a sexy Carlisle/Bella fic in her vast list of stories called Young Man’s Fancy that made me want to lick my computer screen.  No matter what she’s written, either wolf pack stories or vampy AU, I’ve enjoyed every minute of reading her work.

In my notes to her (in lieu of reviews) I left little comments about how much I was enjoying each of her chapters and  stories, and we started a fun email correspondence.  Not only is she a fantastic writer, but she turned out to be one of the most lovely ladies I’ve met in the fandom and I’m proud to call her a friend.  One thing led to another, and soon I was flattered to see some reviews of my own stories coming in from her.  I was thrilled that such a great writer took interest in my work (and, I’ll be honest, a little worried she would think I’m entirely too pervy for my own good), but to my delight she enjoyed them.  She’s even taken time out of her busy life to give me advice on original fiction writing, which was, and is, much appreciated.

LJ Summers has been nominated for (and won) numerous awards for her work and is a wonderful member of the Twilight fandom.  If you happen to check out her stories on FanFiction or any of the other places she posts, please grace her with a review.  I know she’ll love it.

Before I get too long-winded, I’d like to close with a little teaser from The Hardest Part, the first in the Imprinting: The Mating Imperative series.

From Chapter 1, where Embry is remembering imprinting on Bella:

And then she looked past Jacob to the rest of us. We stood there, our arms crossed, waiting for Jake to tell her goodbye. I grimaced and prepared to meet her accusing expression –

Wide brown eyes met mine and I gasped. I felt my arms fall out of their protective stance. All the pieces of my life took a few steps back, distancing themselves from the girl who had suddenly become the center of my universe with a jolt that left me breathless. Mom? The pack? School? My best friends, Jake and Quil? None of them held my heart or loyalty anymore. Not like she did. Not like Bella Swan. Everything made perfect sense, now. Everything. My head felt light. I felt a heat start burning in my heart. It was like something was glowing inside of me. I was imprinting. Me. Wow.

I saw her blink while I tried to get a handle on this. Of course – she had no idea what was happening, did she? She knew vampires, not werewolves. Well, now she would. Anything she wanted to know, I’d tell her.

I approached her eagerly, only belatedly hearing my brothers’ shocked exclamations. “Bella,” I said, reaching the door of her truck and standing right next to Jake. “It’s you.”

“Embry?” Jacob’s husky voice hit me sideways, but I couldn’t drag my eyes from Bella’s face. Her deep brown eyes, the growing blush in her cheeks. I felt like I could stare at her all day and be completely happy. I was fiercely glad that I was a werewolf because I knew that I had helped rescue her, that day in the meadow.

When Jake called my name again, I tried to pull my attention from Bella, but it was really hard. I needed to talk to her, to hear her voice, to touch her...

Judge Spotlight - Chef Diamond Heart

As written by WolvesCanEatMe

Chef Diamond Heart is an OC Awards judge and can be found on several fandom sites. You can find her on FF.net, Twilighted, and on Jacob Black and Pack.

Chef Diamond Heart (affectionately CDH) was suckered into judging the OC Awards by yours truly, and it was my pleasure to be her judging partner as we waded through our chosen categories.

CDH has written several great stories—all of which can be found on her profiles listed above. It’s a tough task to pick just a few of her fics to talk about.  Back in the day, (December 31, 2009,) I finished Moonshadow, which was my first EVER wolf pack fic. It’s an alternate take on New Moon—normally I’m not drawn to a Jacob/Bella pairings but her descriptions and writing style totally sucked me in. One of her more recent short stories, The Color of Rain, is probably one of my favorite stories to date. It is a Seth/OC story, with great characters, real life comedy, and perfectly tangy citrus.

Chef Diamond Heart was one of the pivotal authors that helped to promote my tolerance and grow my love for the wolves. Our friendship just kind of happened. My persistent reviews filled her inbox and she devotedly replied to me.

When I first started writing my own story her opinions and thoughts meant the world to me. Not only was this awesome author taking time out of her busy life to read my writing, but she gave up her time to support me and help me get better. We’ve been fan fiction friends for a little over a year now, and I don’t regret her pulling me over to the furrier side of Twilight for a second! :)

Recently, CDH competed in the After Your Heart Stops Beating Contest, and her OS Enough won in both the popular vote and the judges' pick. Wordslinger just posted a great rec of Moonshadow  on the Twi Fic Pimps blog. ArtBeatsandLife posted a lovely rec of Working Man (AH Jake/Bella) on the Phase Fics blog, and also on Phase Fics, littlefurrycannibals wrote an inspiring rec of Moonshadow.

Three of Chef Diamond Heart’s stories (Working Man, The Color of Rain and A Hair of the Dog that Bit Me) were nominated for the Pearl Round of the Twilight Gems Awards.

CDH is a proud beta for Sublimation by sfiddy, and so-called “deputy muse” to the talented leelator, author of How to Seduce a Werewolf. She also started the one and only The Bella and Jacob Chronicles on Twilighted.

Here is a list of all of her fabulous work: (LINKS)
The Moonshadow Continuum (CDH take on: The Saga that Should Have Been)
The Fractured Angel (EPOV - WIP)
You Belong to Me (about Leah)
The Color of Rain (about Seth)

A list of her awards:
Moonshadow- IndieTwiFic Finalist 2010; 3rd Place Winner Wolfpack Awards & Howling Wolf Awards ’09
The Color of Rain- Winner Judge’s Pick Award in the Team SOB Rain Scene Challenge; Winner Best Seth, Jacob Black 'n' Pack Awards
The Mind’s Eye-Winner Lamb’s Choice Award in the I Get Off In Volterra Contest banner
CDH also received two honorable mentions in the Fandom People Awards.

Judge Spotlight - Solareclipses

Spotlight by Pemberly Rose

Hmm, how do I begin with Solar? *taps chin* I met her through the illustrious Lunar Siren and through Solar reading my work (insert honored blush here).  It wasn’t long before Solar and I started talking through twitter, and then conversing on Gchat.

The absolute best part about her is her intelligence. She is scarily smart and crazily well informed. I feel better about the world when I talk to her, knowing that there’s at least some smart people out there. She’s a multimedia designer and she’s actually taught me how to use Photoshop merely by pointing me in the right direction.

A while back, when a certain wonderful Brit Actor whose name rhymes with Mobert Schmattinson was photographed jumping off a dock into the ocean in South America, we were giggling over the possibilities of this picture and I prophesized that it was going to be the next internet meme. To compile and showcase the multitude of Jumping Rob’s, Solar developed the fuckyeahjumpingrob tumblr and made a template so even those techtarded people like me could make their own memes. What resulted was an Internet phenomenon! Neither Solar nor I claim to have originated the meme just in case you were wondering. She simply created a place to showcase the art and hilarity that definitely came along! And I’m so glad she did!

You can find Solar on Twitter as @Solareclipses, Tumblr, FicTumblr, Fanfiction.net, Twilighted, FormSpring, and Last.fm.  She also betas for Project Team Beta, is involved with TwiNetwork, and hangs around at ADF.

I’d been putting off reading her fic. I wanted to wait until it was completed. But I didn’t.

My personal favorite of her work is not the popular Sins of the Piano Man (SotPM) but the short five shot Arcana. Oddly, I had read it a week or so before we received our categories and lists of nominations. So I was rather surprised (maybe I shouldn’t have been) when I saw Arcana in the In Name Only category. Now I’m an extremely fair person and I’ll admit I was a little worried about putting a Judge’s fic into the nominations, but I had extreme faith in my fellow judges and the administrators of these awards and that really put any anxiety I had at ease. So I filed Arcana aside and made sure I read through each and every one of the fics (as I did with all the categories I had) in the category with a fine-toothed comb. All but six of them weren’t able to meet the criteria for the category. I wasn’t surprised when Arcana was one of the six.

Knowing Solar has really given me a lot of insight into her writing. She’s concise yet visually provocative with her word choice and structure of her stories. For example, she’s one of those people who needs to be published and on the NY Times Best Seller list. Sins of the Piano Man tells the tale of a vigilante who secretly strives to be loved, to be good, and ultimately for salvation from the life he has as a vampire. This story isn’t the typical E/B story. This isn’t any different to how she actually is as a person. Conversing with her I’ve learned that she has a knack for the darkest humor (think like a female Quentin Tarantino) and the most eclectic taste in music I have ever encountered.

I was extremely excited when I signed on to be a judge with the OCs and saw that Solar was also a judge. I knew, just knew, that these awards would be probably the most fair and ethical in the fandom. Solar has more integrity and a sharper moral compass than anyone I know. As the judging process went on, Solar and I found ourselves discussing fics within our separate categories (seeing as we’d been paired up with others and given different categories). We talked about what makes a good OC, what’s strong writing and what isn’t.

I feel as if everyone involved really cared about these awards and making them the best they could possibly be. Solar is definitely someone I look to in the fandom for everything from friendship, advice, tech tutorials and just random silliness. I can honestly say she’s become one of my closest friends within the twi-fandom and I’m really honored to call her that.

Excerpt of SotPM Chapter 14

"Actually, Edward," he said, his tone losing all dreaminess as he turned decidedly academic, "it seems to me that most vampires find human mates, not vampire mates. This usually drives us to turn them. There are exceptions to this, of course, but I believe it to be our form of reproduction, the way our species continues itself, despite our inability to breed in the more traditional sense."

He went on, going into great detail about what he'd observed in our kind over the centuries—he'd apparently been turned in the 1600s and knew a thing or two. Normally, I'd find the discussion interesting, but I wasn't listening now, despite my nods and words of encouragement, such as "oh, really, is that so?"

Part of my brain catalogued every word he said, but my attention was elsewhere.

I'd known he was right as soon as he'd said it. I was mated to Bella, and the tragedy of that was palpable. While she might not come stamped with an expiration date, she certainly had one, just as her dying father did. I could never change her, subject her to this eternity of burning hunger… Could I?

Surely not.

Should I even want to, I was apparently now in the one place I readily knew I couldn't bite a human, unless I wanted to break treaties and wrestle with oversized canines who apparently could make quick work of me. To top it all off, the werewolves had a personal history with Bella, in particular. Wonderful. At least that made the decision simple, and yet, at the same time, it was upsetting to have the choice stolen from me before I'd had time to consider it.

Not that there was much to consider. I could never tell Bella the truth of what I was, let alone change her. I'd always been selfish, giving into pleasure when I shouldn't—a sinner at heart. I was selfish now, interfering with Bella's life when I knew our relationship couldn't last. I loved her, though—deeply—and that could perhaps make me less selfish than usual. I wouldn't subject her to this existence. I was late in making selfless decisions, but I would do for Bella as Carlisle had done for me. I would leave her human.

She deserved better than I could give, and one day, I'd have to step aside as a better man took my place.

Judge Spotlight - BforQueen

Spotlight By: Pemberly Rose

I met Bianca, aka Bforqueen, through twitter and this crazy fandom of ours. For those of you who don’t know her, she’s a single gal who lives in the Netherlands and has a penchant for snarky, brazen and silly fun. She writes Volturi fic mainly. Her stories, listed below, tend to center upon the Volturi with major appearances by the Quileute Wolf pack and sometimes the Cullens.

When I got started with the OC Awards, I was a little nervous. I was acquainted with Bianca and knew she was smart and fantastically witty, but I still worried that she and I would clash on fic tastes and the like when we got paired up together.

My worries were definitely not needed at all. We found out that we have a lot of the same tastes in fic, especially things that make us flounce from one, or things we look for in original characters. Working with Bianca has been a treat. She was always super quick with email replies, and we often talked on gchat about nominees and our opinions as we whittled down the lists to the six per category nominees you see in our three categories. How we accomplished all that we did, I’ll never know. The funny thing is, there’s quite a huge time difference between us. She lives in Europe (sooo JEALOUS of her!) and I live here in good ole Phoenix, AZ.

Several people had recommended for a long time to read Bianca’s fics. In fact, Fallen Princess had been on my reading list for a REALLY long time. After we got done with this judging thing-a-mah-jig, I decided that I wanted to give her work a try. So I started out with FP.

I have to say wowzers. She takes the possibilities of hybrids that SM put on the table in Breaking Dawn and brings this whole completely awesome twist. Where most authors would have followed Renesmee through something like this, Bianca goes through an original character, named Luciana (Lucy). She’s the hybrid progeny of the Volturi, who they hope will become the new species within the race of vampires. They want her to lead and hoped she had an ability. Unfortunately for them, all Lucy wants is to be loved. I won’t go in too far with the plot but really if you love a good original character and you really want to see the darker side of the Volturi, you really, really need to check out Fallen Princess.

If that doesn’t convince you maybe this little fan video of it will!

As I said before, Bianca has been a pleasure to work with on these awards. She’s got the silliest sense of humor, and I love talking to her about fic and her love hate relationship she has with the actor known as Charlie Bewley. I’m really glad I got paired up with Bianca and discovered more wonderful work out there in this VAST twi-fandom.

It didn’t surprise me that when other categories were validated by our other esteemed judges, that I saw B’s name appear twice. I’m very happy for her; she makes some stiff competition, just sayin’. Fallen Princess and its companion Absolution have won and been nominated for several awards, also listed below.

In addition to writing awesome Volturi fic, B also blogs. She does fic recs over at Tazz’s blog and also participates in MVF’s blog feature Wicked Wednesdays. She can be found through her twitter account, Bforqueen, and is always giggling or making sarcastic commentary about something. I know that when I see her out and about on Twitter that hilarity will inevitably ensue along with the occasional boob flash.

Really I have to thank this contest for letting me get to know Bianca a little better, and that’s really the icing on the cake!
